The 2003 Vincent Xavier Verodiano
Award was jointly conferred on Roland Martins in recognition
of his commitment to foster and uphold the values of civic integrity,
justice and conscientiousness.
- Mr. Roland Martins has campaigned
for human rights for over two decades. He was instrumental in
setting up consumer groups in various parts of Goa, and his weekly
symposium, Friday Balcao, conducts group discussions on local
issues. He also maintains a documentation center known as Goa
Desc Resource Center, which provides the public with essential
information on issues vital to the social and economic wellbeing
of society. His recent initiative, GOACAN (Goa Civic & Consumer
Action Network) is a network of samitis and forums that enables
the public to effectively address and resolve matters of civic,
consumer, and environmental concerns.
